PSN Offline for days - All info you need to know
It has been a week since the PlayStation Network was taken
offline by an hack. For now it doesn't look like it that the PSN will be online soon. Here are all the known information and details what happened.
Sony found out between april 17th to 19th that some of the PSN- and
Qriocity-accounts were hacked and the information is in the hands of the hackers. Sony decided to put the PlayStation Network and Qriocity offline on April 20th (American time), so it isn't possible to play online since then. Because of this the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home are offline and some games that needs an online verification or requires online login.
After the investigation Sony found out that the folllowing information, that you have to fill in on your PSN registration has been compromised: name, address (city, county, postal code), country, e-mail-address, date of birth, PlayStation Network-password and login, PlayStation Network-account.
Of the following it is not known if they are compromised: profile data, including facture, and buy history, facture address (city, county, postal code) and secret question for the PlayStation Network.
Sony says that the hackers don't have your Credit Card number and maturity but isn't 100% sure about it. But the CVC-code of the credit card users is not compromised. At first when the PSN was down, it was expect it was by the hacker group Anonymous. Who recently have put PSN down for a day on April 5th. They did this action for the guy Sony sued for hacking the PS3 and giving the info to people how to hack the PS3. That sony needs to pay for their actions.
It is unlikely Anonymous is behind this, cause of the downtime and all the information that has been stolen. Anonymous is focussed on big "bad" businesses, not the users, who they see as victims. It is possible that this is the work of criminal hackers, who abuse the account information or want to sell to other criminals. With 70 millions accounts and many millions linked credit cards makes the PSN an attractive victim.
The last attack, the hacking group Anonymous put the PSN and some PlayStation-websites down after Sony sued a PlayStation 3-hacker George ‘Geohot’ Hotz.
Which isn't the same as we have now.
Sony is busy with 4 things at the moment:
1. Researching how it was possible to hack PSN.
2. Researching what kind of information has been stolen and which users? And then find out what the consequences are. 3. Try to fix the leak. Rumours say that Sony is building PSN from the ground up again, don't believe the rumor though until Sony explains it better.
Sony is fixing the leak and examining the leak. Sony will put the PSN back online when it is fixed 100%. Besides that with 70 million accounts and a huge quantity of information, and it will take a lot of work to find out what kind of information is exactly is stolen of course.
It is yet unknown when the PSN is going online again, and sony isn't 100% sure if they can fix it in a week. Sony is looking out for a gift action to give to all ps3 users.
